How to make the most of your small garden

If your garden or outdoor area is small, you might be struggling to come up with ways to best utilise the space.

Here, we take a look at how to make the most of your small garden and provide our top five tips for bringing a small outdoor area to life.

  1. Introduce different levels

Installing steps up to a seating area or creating different levels will make a garden feel bigger as well as more interesting. This is particularly useful in sloping gardens, where levelling will introduce vertical lines and visually increase the space.

Levels can be created in a variety of ways. Decking is a great way to add height in a garden simply and effectively. Available in both wood and composite, our decking is available in a variety of colours to suit all tastes and styles.

Using sleepers is a great way to introduce steps to an outdoor area. Natural and timeless, sleepers are an elegant and durable addition to any garden. We have a variety of high quality hardwood and softwood sleepers to choose from, including oak, treated softwood and rustic landscape sleepers.

If you prefer the look of a classic brick wall, then we have bricks and blocks available in all shapes and sizes. For a rustic finish, try our Terca Olde Essex Red Multi Brick.

  1. Hang plants vertically

If your ground area is limited, then hanging baskets and window boxes is a great way to add colour and texture to your garden or balcony without taking up precious space. Hanging pots vertically from fences or along railings will ensure you make the most of the area available and will help to soften fences and walls while creating privacy from prying eyes.

  1. Create a focal point

Having a focal point, such as a water feature or raised terrace, will add interest and depth to your garden. Choose space enhancing materials, such as light-coloured stone, which will reflect natural light and brighten the area. Avoid using materials such as dark slate and instead opt for smooth cobbles, such as LRS Flamingo Pebbles 20-50mm.

Take a look at our wide range of decorative aggregates, gravel and stone, which are perfect for placing around pathways or serving as a stylish feature around a fountain.

  1. Use diagonal paving

Laying paving diagonally will increase the visual size of your garden and create the optical illusion that it’s a bigger space.

Choose light-coloured slabs, such as Bradstone Natural Sandstone Fossil Buff or Global Porcelain Urban Beige.

  1. Choose your colours carefully

Pale plants and light, cool-coloured paint shades will make a small area seem lighter and larger. Spruce up boundaries and bring borders to life with our range of fence paints, which are available in a variety of hues, including the soft and subtle country cream of Culprinol’s matt wood treatment paint.
