Internal Door Buying Guide

An internal door does more than a way to create a barrier between rooms or an aid to privacy. Internal doors are a great opportunity to add some of your personal style to a space, while also perfectly finishing off a room. But when there’s so much to choose from, where do you start? That’s where we can help!

We’ve created this helpful door buying guide to ensure our customers can make the best decision when choosing their internal doors!

Where to start?

The best place to start is thinking about things you can’t budge on – size, budget, and whether to not you require fire doors.

Measuring your door

Measure the width of your door at the top, middle and bottom of the frame opening where the door will go. Use the widest measurement of the three to find the width of your new door.

Do the same for the height, measuring in three different points, and selecting the longest length for the height of your new door.

We may not offer a door in your exact measurement, but that’s ok. Some of our doors can be trimmed down, just make sure you check the amount you can trim to get your required sized door.

Do you need fire doors?

Ensuring a fire door is in place where required is essential. Fortunately, most of our most popular door styles come in a fire rated option with at least FD30 rating.

The British Woodworking Federation states that “In domestic dwellings above two levels, every door leading to the stairwell (at all levels) must be a fire door, where the door leads to a habitable room. (i.e. not a bathroom or w/c). Fire doors are also required in loft conversions; between the house and integral garage; and between the business and residential elements in a mixed-use building.”

We would also strongly recommend choosing a fire door for any rooms that are at a higher risk of fire, such as kitchens, living rooms with fireplaces, or anything that could cause an electrical fire. For peace of mind you may also want to choose fire doors for your bedrooms.

For more information on fire doors, please read our Fire Door Information post.

Once you’ve measured your door, decided on your budget, and worked out if you need a fire door or not, you can start to think about the fun stuff, style, handles, finish, glazed or not – the list goes on.

Style

Here at Covers we can offer classic and more modern door styles from some of the most popular door brands such as Mendes, LPD, Premdor, XL Joinery and Deanta. Whether you’re looking for a panelled or flat door, white primed or pre-finished oak, pre finished Grey or any other colour we’ve got something for you.

You can paint them, varnish or stain them, whatever you decide, our range of doors will offer you whatever it is you’re looking for to perfectly finish off your home.

Here at Covers we offer unfinished, prefinished and primed door options meaning you can finish the doors to your own personal style, or opt for something that requires no additional finishing.

Glazed

Glazed doors are perfect for rooms you want to let a little more light into, though frosted glass doors offer the best of both privacy and light. We have options that are fully glazed, or partially, so you’re bound to find a glazed door option that suits you here at Covers.

Many of our most popular doors are available in glazed options. Typically rooms that need more privacy such as bedrooms and bathrooms have unglazed doors, whereas living and dining spaces can benefit from the extra light a glazed option brings.

Handles

If a door finishes a room of perfectly, the handle finishes the door, and your choice can add a little something extra to whatever door you go for.

We have a range of door handles in different finishes, including brushed chrome, black nickel, aluminium and all will add a different finishing touch to your door choice. Many of our handle options come in bath packs that include locks for rooms that require some extra privacy.

Here at Covers we offer the ironmongery to suit whatever door handle you opt for.
