For many reasons, porcelain paving is the most popular choice for garden paving and patios, but is it the right choice for your garden? We have answered some of our frequently asked questions on porcelain paving.

What is porcelain paving?

Porcelain paving is formed by baking a mixture of clay and naturally occurring materials, which are exposed to significant pressure and fired at high temperatures in a kiln. This process, known as the “vitrification process”, creates an extremely strong and hard-wearing material, which absorbs very little water in its lifetime. Creating a high density, hard, and wear-resistant surface has made it probably the best type of paving available today.

Does porcelain paving last a long time or fade?

Porcelain paving is designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, including rain and snow. It will not fade over time like other types of porcelain patio slabs. The material used in porcelain pavers also has a high resistance to UV light, so the colour will not change or be impacted by sunlight.

Can you cut porcelain paving?

Yes, porcelain paving can be cut to any size.

Is porcelain paving expensive?

Porcelain Paving is a premium product and typically more expensive than other types of paving, such as natural stone or concrete paving. At Covers, we have a range of porcelain paving options to suit all budgets, depending on the style and size of your patio.

It’s important to note that although it can be expensive, the paving quality is generally higher when opting for porcelain. The composition of porcelain tiles means they are extremely durable and hard-wearing, so you can expect a porcelain patio to last a long time, giving you great value for money.

Do I need to seal Porcelain Paving?

Its hard ceramic surface, which is resistant to harsh weather conditions, is not porous like natural sandstone paving, so it will not absorb water. Sealing it wouldn’t work and would most likely ruin the paving itself.

Is Porcelain Paving stain resistant?

If you spill something on porcelain paving, it is best to use a damp cloth or sponge and wipe it away. As mentioned, it is not porous, so anything spilt will just sit on the top of the surface.

Does porcelain paving scratch or chip easily?

Many people hear the word porcelain and instantly think it's fragile, but the paving is quite hard and durable, which means it won’t scratch as easily as softer stones like sandstone. Chips from items such as sharp objects and gardening tools, are possible if it is not properly maintained.

Is porcelain paving slippery?

Porcelain pavers have a smooth surface and can often look slippery, but most porcelain paving has a very good anti-slip resistant surface which outperforms most smooth natural sandstone paving. The primary cause of any slippery paving is the growth of algae, which thrives in wet conditions, is hard to get rid of, and causes the area to become slippery. Porcelain Paving withstands algae in the first place, so this will not happen as often as it would with other types of paving.

Does porcelain look like natural sandstone paving?

As a man-made product, outdoor Porcelain Paving tiles have a similar appearance to Natural Sandstone, which means that they will look good and be more durable.

How easy is it to keep porcelain paving clean?

If you are looking for a low-maintenance, easy-to-clean option for your garden, Porcelain garden slabs are the best solution and one of the easiest paving types to keep clean. Simply clean with hot soapy water, as you would your kitchen floor. Like most areas, clearing off loose debris, such as compost, leaves, or grass cuttings, is a fantastic idea. Remember to take extra care around any plant pots or garden furniture on a patioed area as this will help to keep your tiles looking in immaculate condition.

Is Porcelain a good choice for modern garden designs?

Dark grey porcelain paving outdoor tiles are a huge trend for 2022 and are featured in our landscaping brochure, which also includes the wide selection we have available online and in-store, as well as options for patterned paving.
