Getting the garden ready for spring

Preparing the garden for spring is a crucial time in any gardener’s calendar. If your outside space is looking a little unkempt after a freezing winter, it can feel daunting to get started.

The key is to plan to make sure that spring doesn’t catch you unprepared. Look at what jobs need to be done and get all the essential materials you need in advance – as they can sell out quickly!

Here are some of our ideas for things you can do to get ready for the new season.

Mulch beds

One of the first things you’ll want to do is remove weeds and mulch beds with bark chippings. This prepares beds by helping to reduce weeds and improve soil structure and drainage – laying the foundations to produce happy plants.

You’ll also want to stock up on compost and topsoil to make sure you’ve got everything you need when the time comes to start planting.

Replacing fence panels

Fences are often worse for wear by the end of winter. Gales can blow entire fence sections down, and damp weather can cause fence panels to warp or rot over time if they are not rot-resistant. If your fencing is in need of some TLC, take a look at our range of traditional and contemporary fence panels – they’re designed to be durable and resistant to rot.

Laying new turf

If your lawn has suffered over the winter, you might need to reseed or lay new turf. Take a look at our lawn care products to find everything you need.

If you want a lawn that looks great all year round, you could consider artificial grass – you can view our range here.

Repainting sheds and garden furniture

Winter can be hard on garden furniture, especially if it has been uncovered in harsh weather conditions. Wooden furniture and sheds may need to be repainted, stained or protected with wood treatment.

At Covers, we stock a huge range of wood stains, wood treatments and garden paint to give your sheds, fences and furniture a new lease of life.

Extend your trellises

Climbers thrive in spring, so extend your trellises, wire arches and tripods to encourage shoots sideways and upwards and create an eye-catching feature.

We stock a wide range of landscaping products at our depots, where you can view different materials and speak to our knowledgeable teams.
